US: Capitol police do not rule out another attack on Congress 5 Sep 5 Sep

United States Capitol Police Chief Tom Menger said Monday that despite his department’s efforts, there is still a possibility of a new attack on Congress similar to that of January 2021.

“As we approach the two-year anniversary of one of the darkest days in our nation’s history, we must answer this critical question: ‘Could it happen again on January 6?'” Menger wrote in a statement.

“In our nation’s polarized state, an attack is like the one faced by our department […] it could be tried again,” the official admitted. “If the unthinkable happens, we will be prepared,” he said.

Menger asserted that the USCP (English for Capitol Police) “has been working around the clock to implement more than 100 significant improvements” so that the current situation is now “clearly better than before the January 6 attack”. However, he acknowledged that “there is still a lot to do”.

“The current climate of threats, particularly against elected officials, will require continued and heightened vigilance. We will do everything we can to fulfill our mission to protect members of Congress,” he said.

Menger explained some of the actions that had been taken, including the appointment of a new director of intelligence and the best capabilities of the civil unrest unit.

Likewise, from now on, it is necessary to create incident action plans that define the responsibilities of officials attending demonstrations and important events. (RT News)
