According to US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, he said President Biden made the decision to send the cluster munitions on “the unanimous recommendation” of his administration.

Sullivan stressed that the delivery of the bombs is “critical” in the context of Ukraine’s arms support, at least as Washington ramps up its domestic production of artillery munitions.

The national security adviser indicated that the official announcement of the delivery of cluster bombs would come from the Pentagon.

When asked about the delivery of cluster munitions to Ukraine, US President Joe Biden said it was a difficult decision and he had discussed it with allied countries and Congress.

The US on Friday announced a new $800 million military aid package for Ukraine, which has grown to over $41 billion since February 2022 and also includes this type of munitions.

Dating back to World War II, cluster bombs can be used in rockets, missiles, and artillery shells. After throwing, they open up in the air and spread many mini bombs over a large area.

Depending on the type of weapon used, the number of submunitions ranges from a few dozen to over 600.

Many countries have banned its use and production under the 2008 Oslo Convention, to which the United States and Ukraine are not party.
