According to media reports, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted last week, does not want to run for office again. The Republican asked his party colleagues not to nominate him, CNN reported last night (local time). He will support the person his group agrees with. He had already indicated that he would no longer rule out the possibility of running again for the position.
The 58-year-old was eliminated as speaker of the House of Representatives last week. In a vote, in addition to the Democrats, eight Republican members also spoke in favor of his removal. It was the first time in US history that someone was removed from this position. McCarthy later announced that he would not be available again.
Republicans met behind closed doors last night (local time) to hold a candidate forum of sorts. An internal vote was planned for today. There is still no date for the official vote in the Chamber of Deputies among all deputies. After McCarthy was eliminated, far-right Jim Jordan and more moderate Steve Scalise announced their candidacies last week. They must present their positions in the candidate forum.
