The violent attack on the heart of Brazil’s government by far-right extremists is a sad but familiar spectacle, said House Democratic Party leader Hakeem Jeffries, who explained on his Twitter account
that “we are with the people of Brazil and democracy.”
His colleague Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also from New York, made a similar statement, calling on the United States to show solidarity with the President of this Latin American country, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The congresswoman pleaded for support for Lula and his administration while calling for “no more sanctuary” for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently in Orlando, Florida.
“Almost two years to the day, when the United States Capitol was attacked by fascists, we see fascist movements abroad trying to do the same in Brazil,” Ocasio-Cortez warned in a tweet.
Representative Joaquín Castro has called on the Biden government and Florida state authorities to extradite Bolsonaro, who is currently in the hospital there with what the press says is severe abdominal pain.
“Terrorists and domestic fascists must not be allowed to use the Trump playbook to undermine democracy,” the Texas Democrat added.
Meanwhile, Senator Cory Booker said he was “disturbed” by the events that took place in Brasilia last Sunday and expressed his support for the democratically elected government in the South American state on the internet platform itself.
While Jamie Raskin, a former member of the House Select Committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, alerted “the world’s democracies” to the need to “act quickly” to clarify that there was no support for the insurgent right-wing groups that broke into the Brazilian Congress.
“These fascists, modeled after Trump’s January 6 rioters, should end up in the same place: in jail,” he said on the social network.
Like other regional and world leaders, Biden publicly expressed his disapproval of events in Brazil and also invited Lula to visit the United States.
On January 8, Congress, the Planalto Palace and the seat of the Federal Court of Justice in the Brazilian capital were badly damaged by Bolsonaro supporters.
In telephone conversations with various governments, President Lula expressed his gratitude for the concern and solidarity following the invasions and acts of vandalism in Brasilia.
