Latin Press The United States House of Representatives approved this Tuesday (7) a resolution from the Republican Party to censure Democrat Rashida Tlaib for her critical stance towards Israel and her support for the Palestinians.
The measure, which passed by a vote of 234 to 188, amounts to a rare and significant rebuke of the Michigan congresswoman, who is the first PalestinianAmerican woman in Congress.
The censure motion was introduced and passed by Georgia Republican Rep. Rich McCormick after a Democraticled attempt to block the proposal failed.
Tlaib warned that attempts at censorship would silence her, saying that “her colleagues have taken to distorting my positions in resolutions full of blatant lies.”
CONTINUED AFTER RECOMMENDATIONS
After the vote to advance the censure motion, Tlaib gave an emotional speech to the House of Representatives, arguing that her criticism of the Israeli government should not be confused with antiSemitism, CNN reported.
“It is important to separate people and governments. No government is free from criticism. “The idea that criticism of the Israeli government is antiSemitic sets a very dangerous precedent and has been used to silence various voices defending human rights in our country,” he stressed.
She became emotional and had difficulty speaking after saying, “I can’t believe I have to say this, but the Palestinian people are not expendable.” “We are human beings like everyone else,” she said after a long pause .
At that moment, her colleague from Minnesota, Ilhan Omar, stood up in support and placed her hands on one of Tlaib’s shoulders.
