US DOE funds $96M in more EV charging to decarbonize domestic transportation

The US Department of Energy (DOE) today announced $96 million in funding to decarbonize domestic transportation with a focus on expanding EV charging.

The DOE’s announcement states:

Funding is focused on expanding electric vehicle (EV) charging access, creating cleaner off-road vehicles through electrification and the use of alternative fuels, and developing electric powertrain components and materials to maximize EV efficiency and affordability. Non-road vehicles, including agricultural and construction machinery, railroads, shipping and aviation, are a major source of pollution and emit more CO2 emissions than any other sector of the US economy.

Grant applicants must demonstrate how their projects will benefit disadvantaged communities who lack access to clean energy sources.

When it comes to expanding EV charging, it is a must due to the rapidly growing demand for EVs. In addition, the Biden administration has called for electric vehicles to account for half of all automobile sales by 2030.

The DOE says it is “committed to developing solutions in underserved areas and for drivers who do not have access to charging at home.” It also notes that this $96 million is in addition to the $5 billion EV charging program announced in February:

This investment complements the $5 billion provided under the new National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program, established by President Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure bill, to build a national electric vehicle charging network.

Funding is also available for projects aimed at developing novel multifunctional materials for electric vehicles and improving the performance of electric vehicle powertrains.

The DOE also wants to decarbonize transportation such as tractors, planes, trains, and ships.

US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said in a statement:

To meet President Biden’s climate goals, all drivers must expand access to electric vehicles and modernize vehicles that power agriculture and construction.

Application deadline is November 10th, the DOE application portal is here.
