“The European Union and the US are concerned about the ongoing tension in northern Kosovo and call on everyone to exercise maximum restraint and to act immediately for an unconditional de-escalation and to refrain from provocation, threats or intimidation.” This was reported in a communication from the EU External Action Service.
“We are working with President Vučić and Prime Minister Kurti to find a political solution to ease tensions and agree on how to proceed in the interest of stability, security and well-being of all local communities,” the note said.
For the past three weeks, the Serb majority in northern Kosovo has been erecting roadblocks and barricades to protest against the alleged unjustified arrest of three Serbs and the deployment of large forces of the Kosovan special police force to the north by the authorities in Pristina. This situation is crippling the transport and communications system throughout the region affected by the protests, with Pristina threatening security forces to intervene to remove the blockades.
