US expat says roundabouts and no guns in retail stores are putting Americans in a coma

A US woman has listed six strange and amazing things about Australia, including “the fact you can’t just walk into Walmart and buy a gun”.

Hannah Shuman, who lives in Sydney, said the comparisons between the two would put her fellow Americans “in a coma” in a social media video that went viral.

She listed roundabouts, speed cameras, air conditioning, a lack of ranch clothing, and access to guns as huge differences that struck her down.

The gushing video post, presented against a backdrop of Sydney Harbor, was captioned: “Things in Australia that would send Americans into a coma.”

She started off with a “I had to, y’all” intro before placing a comparison at the top of her list.

“The fact that you can’t just walk into Walmart and buy a gun, or really anywhere,” the TikTokker said.

Ms Shuman added to the list that there were “so many” roundabouts in Australia “it’s crazy”.

“Australia doesn’t have a total gun ban so you can get one – but it’s so much harder than America.”

She also couldn’t believe that Australia had heaps of speed cameras monitoring drivers, as opposed to “cops sitting by the side of the road” in the US.

“They just put cameras everywhere [in Australia] catch you while you’re speeding and they’ll automatically send you a ticket,” Ms. Shuman said.

The Florida native shared two frustrating things about the country Down Under compared to what she’s used to.

She was baffled that “central air” wasn’t common in Australia, adding that where she’s from it was “outrageous” not to have air conditioning.

“You’re lucky if you have central air conditioning and it’s probably in a newer building — but most places only have closets or no air conditioning at all,” she said.

“You can’t survive in Florida without air conditioning.”

The avid traveler said the lack of ranch dressing is also a problem for her, as she’s only been able to find a “watered down version” of the original in Australia.

“It’s not ranch dressing,” Ms. Shuman insisted.

But she praised the country’s “incredible” Medicare system, where “you don’t end up with a $1,000 bill in the mail.”

The post attracted a slew of online commenters saying that “tough” Aussies don’t need air conditioning – they just had to “open the windows”.

Another corrected her vocabulary in Australia.

“We don’t call it ‘central air’, it just means it’s an air conditioner somewhere in the middle of the house. We call it “duct air conditioning”.

Ms Shuman then agreed that she meant it, claiming: “I never see it!”.

But others said the differences between the two countries are not that far apart.

“Believe me, we still have cops on the side of the road, as do the speed cameras.”

“We also now have cameras at most traffic lights that will catch you if you don’t have a seatbelt on or on your phone,” added another.

Some disagreed with the air conditioning, claiming it was everywhere Down Under, while others said it was a blessing not to have guns handy.

“It feels good to be able to go to school where the only fear is [that] They have a test,” said one commenter.
