The US is imposing new sanctions on Russia in the face of the war in Ukraine and the atrocities in the Kiev suburb of Bucha. The punitive measures also target the two adult daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Little is known about Putin’s daughters. The eldest daughter, Maria Vorontsova, was born in 1985, the youngest, Katerina Tikhonova, in 1986. Her mother is Ludmila Putina, from whom the head of state divorced in 2013. According to Russian media, Vorontsova is a doctor and co-owner of a medical research company. Tikhonova is said to run an artificial intelligence institute at Moscow State University.
Investment Prohibition for US Persons
According to the AP, the sanctions list also includes Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the wife and children of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and members of the Russian Security Council, including the former Russian President and Prime Minister. Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
The sanctions also target Russia’s Sberbank and Alfa-Bank, which were founded by various oligarchs. The US government also prohibits further investment in Russia by US people wherever they are. In this way, Russia must become even more isolated from the global economy.
Important Russian state-owned companies are also subject to punitive measures. This would prohibit all US citizens from doing business with these companies. The assets of companies in the US are frozen. The US Treasury Department also prohibits Russia from paying debts with funds subject to US jurisdiction.
The UK is also tightening sanctions
Meanwhile, Britain also announced tightening sanctions against Russia and an import ban on Russian coal and oil from next year. The new measures will also ban all British investment in Russia and also “completely freeze” the assets of Russia’s biggest bank, Sberbank, and Russian Credit Bank, the Foreign Office in London said. Another eight businessmen were also sanctioned.
