After the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in August 2021 $7.12 billion worth of US military equipment was left in the country, according to a US Department of Defense report prepared at the request of Congress in March 2022, which CNN had access to.

Now all of these weapons will be in the hands of the Taliban and the Pentagon has no plans to return to Afghanistan “Recover or destroy” their equipment, the document says.

In all, Washington shipped $18.6 billion worth of military equipment to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces between 2005 and August 2021, according to the report. Aircraft, air-to-ground munitions, military vehicles, guns, communication equipment and other war material are among the weapons left in the country after the troops left the country.

It also states that “much” of the equipment left behind in Afghanistan requires specialized maintenance, which was previously provided to Afghan government forces by Pentagon contractors “in the form of technical knowledge and assistance.”

The US also left 78 aircraft worth $923.3 million at Kabul International Airport, which were demilitarized and left idle before the withdrawal was complete, and more than 40,000 military vehicles, including 12,000 Humvees.
