According to the Japanese Coast Guard, this Thursday (29) a US military plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean near the coast of the Japanese island of Yakushima.

There were eight people on board the aircraft, a CV22 Osprey model. No information about injuries was available at the time of publication of this report.

The plane crashed at around 2:40 p.m. local time (2:40 a.m. in Brasília). According to public television NHK, patrol boats and aircraft are being sent to the region where the plane crashed.

NHK also said government officials reported the military plane was traveling between two U.S. air bases in Japan.

TV station MBC said witnesses saw the plane’s left engine engulfed in flames before it fell into the sea.

The Osprey is a kind of cross between a helicopter and an airplane. The aircraft can take off and land vertically and has propellers on both wings.

The US armed forces have already registered a number of accidents with this type of aircraft.
