The first stop must be at a lithium recycling plant in Anjou. Canada’s Critical Minerals Strategy forecasts a sharp increase in demand for this material, which is used in cell phone and electric vehicle batteries, among other things.

Two other stops are planned at the Jean Talon Market in Little Italy and at the Biosphere, an environmental museum housed in the former American Pavilion at Expo 67 on Île Sainte-Hélène.

On Thursday in Ottawa, where Mr Blinken made his first official visit to the country as Foreign Secretary, the humanitarian crisis in Haiti was one of the main items on the agenda.

At the end of that meeting, Ms Joly said that Canada, which is being pressured by the United States to lead a possible international intervention force in Haiti, considered it important above all to make “a good assessment of the situation on the ground”. .

At his side, Foreign Minister Blinken called the situation in Haiti “unsustainable” and praised “Canada’s leadership” to achieve a united front at the United Nations to strengthen citizens’ security.

More details to come.
