Two days after his last sighting, Michigan police found a missing eight-year-old boy in good health in the woods of Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park. Little Nante Niemi had not been heard of since May 6, when he moved away from the area where his family had set up camp. A volunteer helping with the search found the boy near a hollow log he was using as a shelter, just over two miles from the campsite. Niemi had created a bed to protect herself from the cold, using leaves and twigs both as a blanket and as a lying layer on the floor. To keep himself hydrated, he ate clean snow for almost two days. When the police offered to carry him to the campsite, the boy refused and chose to walk the trail.
The searches
On May 6th everything had happened very quickly. Around 1 p.m. the child was busy with his family collecting firewood, reports Cbs News, then nothing more about him. In addition to those from the local police, 150 Michigan police officers were mobilized to conduct the searches. They were assisted by nine police dogs, which covered a search area of over 100,000 square meters of hilly terrain where there was stagnant water due to snowmelt, but which continued to block the passage of several forest trails. Helicopters and ground vehicles were also mobilized, making it possible to quickly locate little Nante, who survived the cold despite not wearing a jacket. Of fundamental importance was the child’s decision to remain in the area where he was lost rather than wandering aimlessly.
