A former Long Island police chief was arrested Tuesday for soliciting a prostitute for sex at a park.
Former Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke, who allegedly screwed up the investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders, was arrested around 10:15 a.m., according to the New York Post. He was later charged with sexual acts, obscenity, indecent assault and criminal incitement.
Recall that in 2012, the 59-year-old man admitted to abusing Christopher Loeb. He had just stolen sexual objects, including a dildo, and pornographic content from him. The 50-year-old was convicted in 2016. He had spent 46 months behind bars.
James Burke was police chief when a suspected serial killer killed four women on Long Island in the Gilgo Beach area. In that case, Rex Heuermann, a 59-year-old architect, was charged on July 13 with three murders of sex workers in 2010. The victims were all in their 20s.
Attorney John Ray, representing the families of Gilgo Beach victims, said then-Police Chief James Burke screwed up the investigation.
Former state senator Phil Boyle also openly criticized the work of the police. According to him, James Burke obstructed the investigation.
“Boss Burke has been involved in the sex industry for decades,” he said. I believe this is one of the main reasons this case has gone unsolved for more than 13 years.
