The United States has called on the United Nations (UN) Security Council to take urgent action against Houthi rebels in Yemen following multiple attacks on Israellinked ships in the Red Sea.

North American representative to the United Nations Christopher Lu told the council's emergency meeting that the Houthis had carried out more than 20 attacks since November 19.

According to Lu, although the Yemeni rebel group lost ten fighters in a clash with US forces after their attempt to board a cargo ship failed on Sunday, the Houthis said yesterday (3) that they were targeting containers from another cargo ship .

International Maritime Organization SecretaryGeneral Arsenio Dominguez told the council that about 18 shipping companies had diverted ships to South Africa to avoid the risk of attack.

The Houthis, who have been locked in a civil war with Yemen's internationally recognized government since 2014, said they would launch attacks on ships in the Red Sea to end Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip.
