Following the attack by radical supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on the government district in Brasilia, the United States has yet to receive an extradition request against the former head of state. “We still haven’t received an official request from the Brazilian government regarding Bolsonaro,” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said today during a visit by US President Joe Biden to Mexico City. “If such a request is made, we will take it seriously.”
Bolsonaro had traveled to the United States with his family on New Year’s Day, two days before the end of his term. According to a media report, Bolsonaro has been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Orlando (US state of Florida) since today. The background is abdominal pain, but his condition “is not worrying”, according to the newspaper “O Globo” referring to a source close to the Bolsonaro family.
Enraged Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the seat of government and the Federal Supreme Court in Brasilia yesterday, causing extensive damage. Head of state Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva accused his predecessor, Bolsonaro, of inciting his supporters. The former president denied the accusations and condemned the attack on Twitter.
