He was a recognized scientist, and that eventually made him an icon. This is announced by Anthony Fauci that in December 2022 he will step down as director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and his role as senior White House medical adviser.
At 81, he is still full of passion and energy, but now he wants to pass on his experience. And experience, Anthony Fauci packs a punch. Since 1984 it has been struggling with several epidemics. From AIDS, which he himself admits he has trouble assessing, to the Ebola and Zika viruses, bird flu, to the Covid-19 pandemic that has propelled him into a global public figure.
From Reagan to Biden
His responsibilities have enabled him to advise seven Presidents, from Ronald Reagan to Joe Biden. It wasn’t always easy. We remember his look of disappointment when Donald Trump publicly questioned whether bleach should be used to fight the coronavirus.
The right-wing Republican Party does not forgive him and is announcing parliamentary inquiries into his handling of the pandemic if the majority moves to the midterm elections. Joe Biden prefers to credit him in a press release. He recalls that one of his first decisions was to expand his practice as a medical consultant. And he claims that thanks to Anthony Fauci, lives have been saved in the United States and around the world.
