Five people died on Monday when a small private plane crashed near a highway in Nashville, Tennessee, southeast Tennessee, local police said.
“Five people aboard the aircraft were killed in the accident,” Nashville Metropolitan Police said in a message posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.
Police also released a photo showing the damaged wreckage of the single-engine plane in an open area off the highway.
For its part, the Nashville Fire Department stated on the same social network that a “fierce fire” was underway when its men arrived on the scene.
The plane's pilot reported an engine and power failure around 7:40 p.m. (1:40 GMT), according to Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron, who was previously quoted by American media.
An emergency landing at John C. Tune Airport was approved, but it crashed a few kilometers away, the spokesman said, announcing the opening of an investigation.
