USA: House explosion in Virginia, firefighter killed, 11 injured

The explosion of a house in Virginia (east coast of the United States) killed one firefighter and injured nine others and two civilians while they were “conducting an investigation,” local authorities said.

Firefighters were dispatched to the home in Sterling, Northern Virginia, about 7:40 p.m. local time (0040 GMT Saturday) on Friday evening “to conduct an investigation,” said James Williams, the city's deputy fire chief, without providing further details about the investigation.

The explosion, which occurred shortly after their arrival, was massive and left a scene of “total devastation” with debris littering the street and neighboring houses.

Injuries to the 11 people hospitalized ranged from “severe” to “less serious,” he said.
