Iran is deeply involved in planning attacks by Houthi rebels on ships in the Red Sea, according to US intelligence. The drones and missiles used in the attacks were supplied by Iran, US National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson told CNN (local time) yesterday.
Watson was referring to information recently released by the secret services. Furthermore, Iran also provided surveillance systems “that were crucial to the Houthi attacks.”
Watson continued that Iran left operational decisions to the Houthis. However, without support from the Islamic Republic, rebels in Yemen will have difficulty effectively tracking and carrying out attacks on merchant shipping routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Tehran denies this
Iran rejected the accusation. The “resistance groups” armed against Israel have “their own means” and act based on “their own decisions and capabilities,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri told the Mehr news agency.
Revolutionary Guards threaten to block the Mediterranean
According to a report by Iranian news agency Tasnim, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards are now threatening to blockade the Mediterranean.
The US and its allies must prepare to close the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar and other waterways if crimes continue in the Gaza Strip, Tasnim Brigadier General Mohammed Resa quoted Nakdi as saying. Iran does not have direct access to the Mediterranean. According to Tasnim, Nakdi spoke before of the “birth of new resistance forces” and associated this with the “closure” of waterways.
