The crowd marched to City Hall with banners demanding “Justice for Jayland.” Hundreds of people demonstrated Sunday, July 3, in Akron, Ohio (northern United States) after video aired showing the police murder of a black man who his attorney said was struck by 60 bullets.
Anti-racist associations called for a fourth day of demonstrations in the city of 190,000 near Cleveland on Sunday.
Jayland Walker, 25, was killed on June 27 while fleeing police after a chase following an attempted arrest for a traffic violation on foot. A very brutal video released by police on Sunday shows the young man being riddled with bullets.
Initially stingy with information about the incident, Akron authorities finally revealed two videos on Sunday. One is a compilation of videos and screenshots from individual police cameras, along with commentary. The second is full footage of the chase and shooting, also from a police camera.
This incident is reminiscent of other black male deaths in police interactions, such as George Floyd. Murders that sparked a major movement against racism and police violence.
