Three people were killed in the shooting attack at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas in the USA this Wednesday (June 12th). The local Metropolitan Police confirmed that the remaining injured, an unknown number, were in hospital. Authorities also stressed that the suspect responsible for carrying out the attack “was found and died.”
According to police, the incident occurred near Beam Hall, a campus building that houses the business school and student union.
At a press conference, Sheriff Kevin McMahill reported that the cause of the attack had not yet been determined.
The attack occurred in the middle of a week before final exams and winter break and occurred in the same city that saw the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history in 2017.
The White House said it was monitoring the situation “very closely.” Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman stressed on social media that the news was “tragic and heartbreaking” and that she was praying for everyone.
Another case in Las Vegas
In 2017, Las Vegas recorded the deadliest mass shooting in United States history, with 59 deaths and 527 injuries. The attack occurred during an openair concert near the Mandalay Bay casino hotel.
The shooting was recorded around 11 p.m. (local time) on October 2 of the same year. The gunman, Stephen Paddock, 64, killed himself after the attack. In the hotel room where the crime was committed, investigators found at least eight guns, some with long barrels.
At that time, the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack and said that the person responsible for the shooting had converted to Islam a few months ago. However, the FBI, the US federal police, ruled out a connection between the crime and terrorism.
