Irvo Otieno was held by nine people for eleven minutes until he died. The case happened on March 6th.
What happened
- Irvo Otieno, a 28yearold black man, was choked to death by police in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He had mental problems.
- Otieno was transferred from the Henrico County Jail to the Dinwiddie County Hospital. He was handcuffed and his legs were chained.
- Surveillance video shows him being led to a chair by two police officers, who then throw him to the ground. He resisted any movement by the police.
- The policemen try unsuccessfully to hold Otieno down and start climbing on him. At one point, nine cops were on the man., and only stood up when he stopped moving. One of them even put his knee on the victim’s neck.
According to The Washington Post, there were attempts to resuscitate him at the scene, without success. The hospital’s chief physician confirmed Irvo Otieno’s death by asphyxiation.
“My son was treated like a dog. Worse than a dog. My son was tortured,” said Otieno’s mother, Caroline Ouko. “Mental health problems shouldn’t be a ticket to death,” he added.
Ten people were arrested in connection with the murder, including seven police officers and three hospital workers.
According to the Dinwiddie County Police Department, the investigation is still ongoing.
