Florida’s governor has introduced a bill that would allow doctors and all medical staff to refuse treatment to certain people. LGBT+ associations immediately felt attacked.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis attacked books for mentioning homosexuality in schools. He even challenged Disney and its films, which were deemed too inclusive. Now he wants to go even further with the doctors and nurses who could refuse care to certain people. Although the bill does not explicitly mention homosexuality, LGBT+ associations see it as a target. “For example, if I say my partner is a man, the doctor might say to me, ‘I refuse to prescribe you drugs like those for AIDS prevention because I have a problem with them,'” explains Brandon Wolf, Door-to-door word from the Equality organization in Florida.
The governor wants to appeal to the radical fringe of the Republicans
For independent experts who have read the bill, it is indeed discrimination “on whatever grounds”. All of this takes place in a political context. Ron DeSantis has ambitions for the presidency and wants to appear as the new standard-bearer of the ultra-conservative Republican right, as a representative of a culture war. However, he has slipped in the most recent polls and only appeals to the party’s most radical base. The latter seem to prefer Donald Trump.
