Countless X users have threatened to delete their accounts as Elon Musk announced that everyone will soon face a “small monthly payment.”

The billionaire owner of the platform formerly known as Twitter caused outrage today when he claimed that charging extra fees to all users was the only way to crack down on bots.

These drastic plans come less than a year after Musk’s Twitter takeover, which has already seen the platform’s Blue Tick verification system monetized at more than £100/$84 per year.

Now all users are facing charges, sparking further interest in Mark Zuckerberg’s “Twitter killer” app Threads.

“The day Twitter becomes a paid service is the day I move on,” one person wrote on X.

Another added: “I’m done with Twitter as soon as Musky tries to charge me for a minute.” Find me on Threads. It’s free.’

“If Musk starts charging for Twitter I’m out of here,” others chimed in. “Start using only threads.” “Twitter will lose a few hundred million users.”

The tech titan revealed his controversial plans during a livestream conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“A bot costs a fraction of a cent, but if someone has to pay a few dollars or something like that… every time you have a new bot you have to get a new payment method.”

“As we prioritize contributions made by We want it to be a small amount of money.

“This is a long discussion, but in my opinion this is the only defense against huge armies of bots.” “The better AI gets, the better it passes captcha tests than humans.”

While further plans remain unclear, complaints have taken X by storm, with many warning that Musk could lose “millions” of users.

This comes just two months after Zuckerberg launched his so-called “Twitter killer” app Threads, which saw a record-breaking 100 million sign-ups within a week of launch.

Although Threads’ active user base has declined in recent months, many are wondering whether there will be a resurgence if Musk’s plans are put into action.

Like X, Zuckerberg’s platform allows users to write thread-style posts and share media content for free to non-subscribers.

“If Elon Musk brings in the monthly fee he announced, we will all be looking for new social media platforms as millions will leave Twitter,” one person wrote.

Another chimed in: “Charge for the use of It’s Your Funeral Service!”

One also joked: “Can’t he charge the bots instead?”

Jake Moore, cybersecurity expert at ESET, also warned that asking all users to pay could create a bigger problem than the bots on X.

He told Web: “Bots were a problem on the platform from the start, but when Musk laid off staff en masse, including security guards, the problem took on a rather uncontrollable proportion.”

“Requiring payment from all users could potentially mitigate this problem, but he could have a bigger problem on his hands with a mass exodus of users.”

“With many similar alternatives like Threads and Mastadon already set up, this could be the final push for some users to switch to the competition.”

Web has asked X for comment.
