SALT LAKE CITY — Utah health officials Tuesday reported 38 COVID-19 deaths, as well as 109 new cases, 20 of which were in school-age children.

The majority of the 38 deaths reported Tuesday — 31 — occurred before February 22, meaning seven of the deaths were more recent.

In addition to these newly reported deaths, Utah Department of Health officials, along with the state coroner’s office, examined previous data and identified 90 additional COVID-19 deaths to be reported over the next week.

As the number of COVID-19 cases has declined in recent weeks, the health department reports that it has given epidemiologists the opportunity to review previous death certificate data.

The seven-day moving average for the daily number of COVID-19 deaths is currently below one, although the Department of Health’s website clarifies that deaths may be added after further investigation, causing the number to rise.

The seven-day moving average for new positive tests is now 134 per day. The 7-day average for positive tests in individuals is currently 4.7%.

The health department has reported another 2,507 people tested and 1,799 vaccinated since Monday’s report.

There are currently 126 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the state, including 19 in intensive care units, according to the health department.

The 38 deaths reported Tuesday bring Utah’s total number of coronavirus deaths to 4,610, meaning just under 0.5% of Utah’s nearly 927,000 COVID-19 cases have resulted in death.
