“I didn’t lift a finger without having the approval of superiors,” Monsignor Carlino told the judges, referring specifically to the time he was secretary to the Deputy Secretary of State, Monsignor Edgar Peña Parra. “About everything that happened added the priest I constantly informed both the Secretary of State and the Holy Father. The error, explained Monsignor Carlino, “affected the thousand shares with voting rights bequeathed to Gianluigi Torzi, which allowed him to continue managing the building even after it had been bought by the Secretariat of State. The will of the Pope was to spend as little as possible to repossess the building. Carlino also specified that his role was simply to maintain relations with the broker, adding that the deputy had told him that Monsignor Alberto Perlasca, the key witness for the Vatican prosecutors, “had shown himself unfaithful and disobedient. The London Palace contracts were signed by Monsignor Perlasca without the consent of the superior: here lay the great infidelity”. Regarding the outcome of the negotiations with Torzi, Monsignor Carlino announced that the replacement had decided to pay 15 million euros to end the relationship with the agent and thus restore full ownership of the London building to the Secretariat of State. Finally, the priest set a milestone, which was celebrated with a dinner offered by the vicar on behalf of the pope.
