  • Velma’s Rotten Tomatoes scores continue to fall after new episodes

The addition of two new episodes of Velma to HBO Max has only pushed the show’s score further down.

Reimagining Scooby-Doo’s puzzle solvers for the adult animated series Velma was a risk that doesn’t seem to work too well for HBO Max. With executive producer Mindy Kaling voicing Velma in a new origin story for the character, the series debuted on HBO Max earlier this month to largely negative reception. His critical scores were quite mixed, with a 55% score on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience score was much lower, starting poorly at 11%.

While the show has garnered heavy viewership, those results are obviously not what the power of HBO Max was hoping for. But some reviewers had stated in their reviews that despite a rocky start, they see potential in Velma, optimistic the series will improve as episodes progress. However, after the arrival of episodes 3 and 4, the scores only continue to drop. The Tomatometer now lists Velma as 52% Lazy on the Tomatometer, while the Viewer Rating has dropped to a very low 6%.

The negative reviews can’t necessarily be attributed to a single reason why Velma doesn’t work with viewers for the most part, as there are many different complaints that people have cited. Even prior to the show’s arrival, the concept alone had drawn criticism when it was revealed that there were no plans to include Scooby-Doo. A Scooby-Doo reboot series without the dog was a hard pill for many fans, putting Velma in an uphill battle ahead of his HBO Max debut to be well received by many. Meanwhile, major changes to Mystery Inc.’s characters and the show’s sense of humor have also come under fire.

Velma isn’t loved, but it wasn’t a total dud for HBO Max. The show debuted as the most-watched original animated series on HBO Max, and while it garnered plenty of negative reviews, it didn’t stop many people from tuning in. It remains to be seen if HBO Max will actually commit to a second season based on viewership alone, or if the harsh reviews would lead them to limit Velma to a single season.

Developed by Charlie Grandy, Velma was inspired by the original characters from Hanna-Barbera Productions. It follows a young Velma as she investigates a dark secret as she gets caught up in a “love square” between Fred (Glenn Howerton), Norville (Sam Richardson), and Daphne (Constance Wu).

The first four episodes of Velma will stream on HBO Max, with the next pair of episodes due to arrive on January 26th.
