The premiere of took place late this afternoon Hors Season (Off Season)leaded by Stéphane Brizé and presented in competition at Venice 80, the 80th Venice Film Festival. The director accompanied the cast on the red carpet Guillaume Canet, Alba Rohrwacher, Sharif Andoura, Lucette Beudin.
Commenting on the film, the director said: “I had already made several films dealing with the devastating financial mechanisms of multinational corporations when Covid struck. This isolation experience forced all of us to “pause” our activities. As individuals who exist largely through our social function, we are all likely to be profoundly shaken by the bewildering uncertainty of our existence. My characters reflect this moment of dizziness. A man and woman come to the logical conclusion of the choices they made when they separated fifteen years ago. I wanted to focus on the moment when we think about the choices that were never made or wrong, about the missed or wasted meetings, about the doors that never opened, about the missed deadlines, about the moments in life that we decided have to take one path instead of another. Secret and obsessive questions that we all ask ourselves, powerful or not, known or unknown, men and women.
In the film, Mathieu lives in Paris, Alice in a small coastal town in western France. He is a famous actor who is about to turn fifty, she is a piano teacher in her forties. Fifteen years ago I fell in love and later broke up. Time has passed. Everyone went their own way and the wounds slowly healed. When Mathieu goes to a spa to overcome the melancholy that grips him, he meets Alice.
