FOXBOROW, Massachusetts. Veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer has reached a two-year deal with the New England Patriots, his agent confirmed.
The deal is valued at $4 million with $3 million guaranteed and benefits, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Several years provide continuity around second-year quarterback Mack Jones. In addition, Hoyer’s institutional knowledge of the Patriots’ offense is of notable value to coach Bill Belichick. His offensive staff is in transition following the departure of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who became the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, with three more assistants joining McDaniels.

It’s curious how Belichick will build his offensive headquarters, as he hasn’t formally appointed a coordinator in McDaniels’s absence. Former New York Giants head coach Joe Judge has returned to the Patriots as a “offensive assistant,” and former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia has been in the spotlight in meetings with the forward this offseason, according to the source.
Hoyer, 36, has made three appearances for the Patriots and 2022 will be his eighth season with the team. His knowledge of the offensive system is perhaps better than any of Belichick’s assistants on the staff.
This could be crucial when it comes to Jones, the team’s first-round pick in the 2021 Draft, who finished second to Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase in the Associated Press vote for Offensive Rookie of the Year after starting all 17 games in 2021. . .
Jones called Hoyer a “close friend” and a “really good mentor” last season, adding: “He’s very supportive and tough on me sometimes, which is good. He keeps me high.”
During his 13-year career, Hoyer appeared in 75 games with 39 starts. He has 897 of 1,512 for 10,631 yards, 53 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.
