Vice President of Venezuela met with Russia’s “good friend” Lavrov

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met on Thursday to review their countries’ strategic alliance and discuss the “difficult” international situation, she said in a Twitter post.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro expressed support for Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow launched an invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

The meeting between Rodriguez and Lavrov came five days after US officials met with Maduro and offered Caracas to supply some of its oil exports to the US as part of an agreement to ease sanctions against the OPEC member nation.

“We had a meeting with our good friend Sergei Lavrov. We reviewed our bilateral strategic relationship and the complex international scenario,” Rodriguez said.

“Venezuela has reaffirmed the principle of the sovereign equality of states as a way to maintain balance for the sake of peace,” she added, without going into details.

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Venezuela Sergei Melik-Bagdasarov tweeted that the meeting took place in Antalya, Turkey, and posted an image of Rodriguez and Lavrov walking side by side.

He did not provide details of the meeting, which was also attended by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Felix Plasencia.

The Venezuelan Ministry of Communications and Information did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Maduro has accused NATO and the United States of causing the Ukraine crisis, claiming they violated the Minsk agreements aimed at ending a conflict that began in 2014 between pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine and the Kiev government.

Placencia will attend a diplomacy forum in the Turkish city from Friday to Sunday, according to a message posted on the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry’s Twitter account.
