the gist After the United States, the “Snowstorm of the Century” hit Canada. Perceived temperatures dropped to almost -40°C in the province of Ontario. Here are stunning images of a city frozen in ice.

In Fort Erie, on the shore of the lake of the same name, in Ontario, southeastern Canada, the Crystal Beach district is completely covered with ice after the passage of the “storm of the century”.

The force of the wind caused a tidal wave that submerged homes, BFMTV noted. Waves, which then froze under the influence of the cold.

The waves “were coming over the wall, they were probably 10 or 15 feet high,” Crystal Beach resident Derek Tupling told CTV News Toronto. “Then the water froze at the back of the houses, from the top of the houses all the way down. You can imagine the volume and force of the water coming over the wall to hit it and then freeze instantly.”

Areas near lakes and waterholes are particularly vulnerable to this historic storm.

Across Lake Erie, in the city of Buffalo, USA, at least 31 people have died.
