(Paris) The trailer for GTA VI, the latest installment in the hit Grand Theft Auto video game series, surpassed 100 million views on YouTube on Wednesday, just over 30 hours after its release on Monday.
Published at 8:35 am.
However, the video did not break the YouTube record for the number of views in 24 hours, which is still held by South Korean boy band BTS, with more than 108 million views for the video for “Butter.”
The trailer for the bestselling story was also posted online on Monday by its publisher Rockstar Games.
The studio had planned to air it at 9 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, but decided to move up the online release due to a “leak,” he said.
Such was the excitement that the trailer received more than 60 million views on YouTube within 12 hours, breaking a record set by American YouTuber MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson.
Highlight of the trailer: The introduction of the character Lucia, fresh out of prison, in a setting similar to Florida, making her the first playable female character in the franchise, which has been criticized for decades for its portrayal of women, minorities and others stands for LGBTQIA+ people.
The video is based on Tom Petty’s Love is a Long Road and includes everything people around the world love – or hate – about GTA: high-speed car chases, scantily clad women and lots of references to social media culture.
Fans almost universally praised the action portions – the YouTube video had 9 million likes – but many commented on the time lag between the fifth and sixth installments.
“At this rate I have about three GTAs left in my life,” wrote YouTuber The Slow Mo Guys in response to the trailer.
