Video Games: The Wonderful World of Unicorns

Legendary creatures, unicorns “exist” since ancient Greece, since we mention them in works of natural history. Today we know that unicorns are imaginary, even if they live in the form of pixels in many games.

In order not to frighten the youngest, let’s start our journey to the enchanted land with “The Unicorn Princess”. A gendered game par excellence with touches of pink and its female heroine, the 2019 title proposes to tame Unica, the unicorn in the world of dreams, while in the real world it is necessary to take care of horses take care of. In total, players can choose six different horses to complete the 15 missions and navigate through this open world.

Very pretty

Still designed for under-18s, Animal Crossing features a unicorn. Not as a main character who is human, but as a neighbor. Julian the unicorn may seem a bit cold at first, but he turns out to be cute. And when you enter his home, you’ll find Greek artwork, a historical nod to a time when unicorns were considered real animals.

Apparently, the Pokémons have also thought of incorporating several unicorns (or monsters heavily inspired by these fabulous animals). Thus we find creatures like Ponyta or Rapidash – with mane and tail on fire – as well as Keldeo, an equally formidable monster, in each of these two incarnations.

Very colorful, the title Peggle is a perfect example of a game of relaxation and skill as you have to pass levels by sending balls into small game pieces. And for each painting, characters come to the aid of players, giving them special powers in particular. The unicorn in Peggle is called Björn and his animations are really adorable.

A little more … “adult”

Obviously, it was to be expected that unicorns in video games would quickly become animals that “gamers” could interact with. And in some cases, it’s great fun or downright “gory.”

Let’s start with the most basic, which is a unicorn that fans of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion can ride like a horse. The fabulous beast resides in the Harcane Grove area and is guarded by three minotaurs. Yes, it is possible to ride on his back. But you can also choose to kill them if you have the courage.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare offers players the opportunity to train a unicorn (you still have to crush four zombie horses to dust). And just to capitalize on the unicorn’s image, know that butterflies surround it when it’s stationary and a rainbow follows it when it’s moving. Yes, it is “cute”.

In the first-person shooter Borderlands, there’s a unicorn named Butt Stallion (I’ll let you guess the cheeky reference). Owned by a certain Handsome Jack, Butt Stallion has a “My Little Pony” twist and is equipped with… two horns.

The unicorn from Red Faction: Armageddon is of dubious taste. The third-person shooter features a plethora of weapons, each more effective than the other, including one that responds to the cute name Mr. Toots. Its peculiarity? You guessed it, it’s a unicorn… shooting rainbow-shaped lasers out of its butt. Enemies hit then turn into butterflies and rainbows; enough to enchant the hardest of hearts.

And finally, under the sweet name “Robot Unicorn Attack” hides a sympathetically violent game as soon as your unicorn – who has to jump over dolphins – encounters an obstacle. Because the flying animal then disintegrates into bloody pieces.
