As of Friday, December 22nd, a volcanic eruption is still underway in Iceland. The residents of Grindavík will not spend Christmas at home.

A firing line south of Iceland since Monday, December 18th. The lava boils for four kilometers. Since Thursday, only fumaroles have escaped. A breathing space for the small town of Grindavík (Iceland), three kilometers away. Evacuated residents are allowed to return to their homes for a few hours to assess the situation. “See the cracks? They are opening up more and more,” says Sigurdur Thorleifsson. The house is now shaky and the future is uncertain.

The mess

At best, the authorities plan for residents to return home on December 28th. Sigridur Jonasdottir will not return. “I feel like it’s starting all over again,” she said. Six weeks ago, the city's 4,000 residents had to be evacuated. After an earthquake, impressive faults appeared. The volcano, which has been dormant for 800 years, has awakened. A month and a half later, the lava that had accumulated under the earth's crust began to flow out. In Iceland, roads appear and disappear due to eruptions.
