Young Indian women are encouraged by their families to get married as soon as possible. But they don’t think so. For Brut, they talk about the weight they carry on a daily basis.

“Dad, can I show you something? – Yes, show me my future son-in-law.” On social networks, Harshita Gupta shoots short humorous videos, in which she depicts her father’s repeated statements about her possible marriage. Except that she doesn’t want to get married for the time being. “When I see this video, I’m… drunk,” breathes Rupinder, an Indian pastry chef. But she’s not the only one feeling this way.

“I listened to what I was told, I got married. My husband was violent, I left him and now they’re telling me the same thing again,” Rupinder denounces. “Marriage isn’t just about sitting down,” says Sreejoni. “I don’t want to ‘lie down’ with anyone. I want to take off, soar and fly with someone.”

“Even though I’ve had very bad experiences myself, I still believe in love, in marriage, in couples. But I think we have to be more open. Society must accept and open its arms to single women and men, people who want to live alone. You have to give them a place,” explains the young confectioner.
