One of India's biggest gangsters, Sharad Mohol, 40, was executed in the middle of the street by his bodyguards in the city of Pune, a metropolis of more than six million people in the state of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital. The crime, recorded by surveillance cameras, occurred on Friday afternoon (5).
According to the Indian press, Mohol has been accused of several crimes including murder, attempted murder, extortion and kidnapping in several investigations. He had already served various sentences in prisons in Maharashtra since 2010, when he was accused of murdering another inmate. The gangster was only released in 2021 after a final pending appeal acquitted him in 2019 due to lack of evidence.
In the images captured by surveillance cameras, the criminal can be seen in a green coat surrounded by his bodyguards. At a certain point on the street, with no apparent signs, two of the security guards pulled out their pistols and started firing at Mohol, who was reportedly shot four times, most of them in the chest. He falls in the middle of the street and some of his henchmen do not seem to understand what their fellow enforcers are doing and even start a physical fight with the gunmen, who then flee.
Mohol had just finished lunch and was on his way to one of his residences where he was moving to visit a Hindu temple in Pune with his wife as it was the couple's wedding anniversary that day. He was taken to a city hospital but arrived dead.
According to local police, the gangster's murder was motivated by a longstanding disagreement arising from disputes over the sharing of profits made by the gang as well as disagreements over the ownership of some lands in rural Maharashtra.
Authorities reported that based on the statements of bodyguards not involved in the incident, other witnesses and recorded images, eight people have already been arrested for involvement in the planning and execution of the crime. The two pistols used by the shooters were also confiscated by the police.
