Nathalie Roy’s absence from the Salon Bleu caused some comical moments on Wednesday, as François Legault, Simon Jolin-Barrette and Bernard Drainville took turns calling Sylvain Lévesque “Madame President.”

“Habit is second nature to man.” This maxim of philosopher Blaise Pascal was confirmed on Wednesday during question time in the National Assembly.

In the absence of Nathalie Roy, the presidency was assumed by the Assembly’s second vice-president, deputy Sylvain Lévesque, who was addressed on a number of occasions as “Madame la President”.

“Madam President… er… Mr. President. Excuse me, Mr. President. “It’s common practice,” Simon Jolin-Barrette apologized after causing widespread hilarity.

A few minutes later it was the Prime Minister who made the same mistake, triggering laughter from parliamentarians.

“Well, Madam President, I think… Mr. President. We’ll get used to it, we’ll get used to it. And the more I look at you, the more I tell myself that we’ll get used to it quickly,” he said, smiling with satisfaction at his joke.
