The fact that there are so many hostages will determine how the Israeli military responds in the coming days, an Israeli army spokesman said.

The armed Islamist extremist group Hamas bombed Israel this Saturday (7) in a surprise attack that is considered one of the largest attacks the country has suffered in recent years.

The Hamas group claimed the attack and said it was the start of a major operation to retake territory (see below). According to the international press, emergency services have already confirmed that at least 532 people have died, 300 in Israel and 232 in the Gaza Strip the latter killed in Israeli retaliation.

Thousands more people were injured. According to Israel’s Health Ministry, at least 1,104 people were taken to hospitals for treatment. Of these, 17 are in critical condition.

In response to the attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country was in a state of war. The Prime Minister launched Operation Iron Swords and called an emergency meeting with the security agencies. The country called up numerous reservists.

“We are at war and we will win,” Netanyahu said. “Our enemy will pay a price he has never known.”
