These galleries are one of the main targets of the Israeli army. They are sometimes dug 30 or 40 meters deep.
They are as valuable to Hamas as they are dangerous to Israel. The underground tunnels in the Gaza Strip provide the terrorist organization with hiding places for combat equipment, meeting points and routes that are protected from surveillance by the Israeli army. They were the target of bombings, particularly on the night of October 27-28, but it is unknown whether the IDF managed to destroy them. Israeli artillery claims to have destroyed 150 Hamas targets.
The “Gaza Metro” would pass under the hospital
Nicknamed “Gaza Metro,” these galleries reach depths of 30 to 40 meters. Their entrances are sometimes well hidden in strategic locations. The Israeli army assures that this is the case in the Al-Shifa hospital in central Gaza. The IDF says it modeled tunnels dug beneath the hospital that would connect command centers also hidden beneath the health facility.
The Israeli army does not provide decisive evidence for this modeling, but in the military community its claims are viewed as credible. “It’s quite classic, we had the same case in Syria, where the jihadist movements were also hidden in a hospital,” says Dominique Trinquant, former head of the French mission to the United Nations.
