Vietnam: A young girl dies when a shop collapses

A 15-year-old girl died Wednesday in a grocery store collapse in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, according to rescue workers who blamed an oversupply ahead of the Lunar New Year.

According to state media, at least one other person was trapped in the collapse of the two-storey building, while eight others escaped from the ground floor.

Rescue workers tried to revive the victim in the ambulance, “but we were informed by the hospital that she was dead,” Nguyen Duy Long, one of the chiefs of the emergency services, told AFP from the city.

Photos from the site show a large quantity of drinks, milk and other produce piled outside the shop by rescuers who searched inside for victims.

In early January, authorities reported the death of a 10-year-old boy who was trapped for four days in a hollow concrete pillar buried at a construction site in Dong Thap province.

Rescuers still have not pulled out the pillar with the boy’s body.
