Creativity is at the heart of everything we do. She pushes boundaries and redefines boundaries while cultivating new ideas and bringing them to life. Creatives need tools that can advance their artistic pursuits. Tools that turn your dreams and visions into reality. Enter the ViewFinity S9.
As part of the ViewFinity S9 Story series (see Part 1 with DEVSISTERS and Part 2 with OIMU here), Samsung Newsroom spoke with Emmy-winning artist Mike Perry, whose explorations of artists cover a wide spectrum, from bright, colorful paintings to whimsical animations and more to talk about how his ViewFinity S9 fits into his creative process.
Q: Could you tell us a little more about yourself?
Oh hello. My name is Mike Perry. I am an artist based in New York. I make all sorts of crazy, fun and colorful things – paintings, drawings, animations – and work with amazing clients. I’m living the dream. It’s bright here, but not as bright as this beautiful monitor. Welcome to my studio!
Q: What role does your teacher play in your creative process?
The monitor is essential. I use it all the time. It’s like he’s part of my eyes. This way you can see what you are doing. You can see your creations come to life. And you want them to be just as beautiful and accurate as what exists in the real world.
When I make a painting I use it for the final step of the process. Essentially it’s about color grading and capturing different elements to ensure my images are as rich and true to life as possible. When I work digitally, the monitor is essentially the same as the screen. The monitor is essential. He is everything.
Q: What was the first thing you noticed when you saw the ViewFinity S9?
The first thing I immediately noticed about the ViewFinity S9 is the color itself. It is simply incredible. I’m a little obsessed with fluorescent colors. I can’t stop using them. Color is such an important part of my existence. Check out how colorful, bright and stunning this beautiful monitor is. It was just amazing to turn it on and – whew! – to see it shine.
I was also impressed with how easy it was to set up and use. The nice thing about making pictures and being a painter is that I don’t always sit in front of a computer. Once I took it out of the box, it was easy to set up and turn on. And it works.
Q: What is a Pantone Validated™ monitor?[1] for creators?
I love Pantone colors. It’s really great to see how faithfully the Pantone patterns match the monitor. I mean, the Pantone book is definitely like a color bible. It is important. But then you’re still dealing with the reality between what’s on the screen and what you’re going to print. You always have to trust that everything will fit together, because the transition from digital to print is a mystery. SO, It’s really nice to know that what I’m seeing is the same color as the swatches. It’s incredible.
Q: Speaking of color accuracy, have you tried the Smart Calibration feature? What did you think?
I love the smart calibration feature[2]. It’s so easy to use and the app is so simple. You want things to be presented in their truest form so you can be confident that what you create can be translated across multiple platforms and media. I love being able to make colors appear the way I want them. This is a truly incredible guarantee.
Q: What other characteristics help you realize your artistic visions?
One of the problems for digital artists is working in widescreen format instead of 9:16 format. On normal screens, only a small portion of 9:16 can be seen, so it is very disturbing. It’s just incredible to be able to rotate the screen and see the image as it’s supposed to be!
The matte screen was wonderful. The sun comes in the morning and shines through the windows, it’s my favorite part of the day, but it burns right into my screen. It was just nice that the sun didn’t interfere with my process and I didn’t have to move away from my computer while the sun was shining. I also have The Frame TV at home, so I’m pretty used to the matte screen by now.
Q: What else can you tell us about your ViewFinity S9 monitor?
Finally, the camera is great. The angle is really beautiful and I love this security guard. If I want to talk to someone, I can go there directly, if not, I’m free. Nobody looks at me.
Q: Would you recommend ViewFinity S9 to other designers?
I think it’s incredibly important to have a nice monitor. Something with a lot of resolution, something that gives me the best I can get and need for my projects. All I can tell you is that the color of the ViewFinity S9 is great.
