Violence in arenas: A coach is accused of assaulting a young ice hockey player

A junior hockey coach appeared in Quebec on Monday to face an assault charge after he assaulted a young bantam-level player during a game last December.

Alexandre Noël, 44, was formally charged with mutual assault on Monday.

The man who was assistant coach at the Boucs de Québec-Centre during the December 18 event rushed onto the ice to brutally attack a player from the opposing team, the Aigles de la Côte-de-Beupré-Ile-d attack ‘Orleans.

The attack, filmed by an arena camera, happened with one of the Boucs players lying on the ice, visibly injured. At that moment, the defendant skips the tape to approach his player. However, he steps over the injured person to go straight for an opponent whom he angrily knocks down.

The game took place in the U-15 B category and included 13- and 14-year-olds.

Authorities were called to the scene and the file was turned over to the Chief of Criminal Investigation and Prosecution, who finally ruled on the charges on March 13. Alexandre Noël had then agreed to appear.

The man was immediately suspended by the local ice hockey association after the incidents.

He will return to court for further trials on May 3.
