Global Affairs Canada recommends avoiding unnecessary travel to certain cities due to the increasing violence and presence of organized crime in Mexico.
“Avoid places where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place. Do not attempt to cross unsupervised. Plan extra time to reach your goal. Expect an increased number of security guards,” wrote Charlotte MacLeod, spokeswoman for Global Affairs Canada.
The state of Sinaloa in particular is to be observed. This region is in the north of the country.
“We had a lot of requests. To allay fears, know that the conflict is taking place in northwestern Mexico, so the only problematic tourist destination is Mazatlán. Recall that last Thursday El Chapo’s son was arrested. A police operation followed with 29 dead and 35 injured. Three aircraft were also hit by bullets.
More than 13,400 Canadians currently live in Mexico.
