Comedian Vir Das won the International Emmy for Comedy for his Netflix special titled Vir Das: Landing. The star first celebrated her big win with the British comedy series Derry Girls – Season 3, which stars Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Dylan Llewellyn.
This was Vir’s second International Emmy nomination and his first win. His standup special “Vir Das: For India” received a 2021 International Emmy nomination for Best Comedy.
This year, Das and Derry Girls battled for victory against “Le Flambeau” from France and “El Encargado” from Argentina.
The award marks a milestone for the comedian, who recalled his struggles ahead of the awards ceremony. In an Instagram post, the star revealed that he even considered taking his own life after the backlash for his satirical poem on his US show.
“The night I was called a terrorist, I was nominated for an Emmy Award,” he said.
Das recalled the trial at the hotel called “Beekman” and revealed that he was suicidal and thought of jumping out of his hotel room. “Each floor was hollow inside and overlooked the lobby. I just remember standing on my floor thinking, ‘I screwed up, they’ll never let me… I should jump’.”
Das concluded his video by saying, “I just want you to know that love is playing right underneath you. You just can’t hear them in the dark. You have to hold on until the sun shines.”
For the big evening, Vir wore a traditional black bandhgala suit.
The International Emmy Awards ceremony will take place in New York City. This year’s nominations included a diverse group of 56 candidates from 20 countries in 14 categories.
