Virgilaine Dutra, founder of Furacão 2000, one of Brazil’s largest funk producers, died this Friday (12). The company confirmed the information and published an obituary on its social networks about the death of Romulo Costa’s partner and exwife.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of the partner of Furacão 2000 and one of the leaders of the funk movement that we know to this day, Virgilaine Dutra.”

“Our beloved Virgilaine, who was the first woman to represent Brazil’s No. 1 team, was married to Rômulo Costa and together they founded the company that revolutionized the national music market. Virgilaine rose to prominence on the Soul stage in the ’70s/’80s as a dancer, Grand Prix and Hurricane 2000, where she formed the Irmãs 2000 duo with her sister Rejane Dutra.

Virgilaine Dutra was Rômulo Costa’s first wife and together they founded Furacão 2000, which was responsible for launching big funk names in the country. She left a son, Rômulo Costa Júnior.

She rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s when she and her sister Rejane Dutra formed the duo Irmãs 2000. The two were on the cover of one of the first Hurricane 2000 albums, released in 1978, Black Soul Discotheque.

The vigil and burial of Virgilaine’s body will take place this Saturday (13th) at 1:30 p.m. at Inhaúma Cemetery in Rio’s North Zone.
