Virginia’s Perris Jones required spinal surgery after the running back was injured in a serious hit in Thursday night’s game against No. 11 Louisville.
The football program said Saturday that Jones underwent spinal surgery Friday at U of L Medical Center and was able to walk briefly Saturday.
“He remains under observation and will be transferred to Frazier Rehabilitation Institute in Louisville for further treatment when his medical team deems it appropriate,” the team said.
Jones was carried off the field on a stretcher and transported to the hospital after a horrific collision in Louisville’s 31-24 win.
On Friday, the school announced that Jones “regained movement in all extremities.”
Jones suffered a huge blow while moving upfield after catching a swing pass on a second-and-27 play in the final minute of the third quarter. The hit sent the ball loose but was picked up by Malik Washington, who scampered into the end zone to give UVA a 20-14 lead.
But the celebration was short-lived as it was immediately clear that Jones needed medical attention. The ESPN broadcast said trainers were immediately on the field to help Jones, who was placed on a backboard and carried off the field on a cart.
The players knelt as Jones was treated. As Jones was placed on the cart, the entire Virginia team surrounded him.
The game eventually resumed and Virginia hit the extra point to take a 21-14 lead. Louisville recovered and won 31-24.
In his post-game press conference Virginia coach Tony Elliott said He received “encouraging” news from the hospital about Jones’ condition.
