A few hours have passed since thenarrest From Virginia Sanjust of Teulada 46 years old, caught stealing in a Smart car. The dramatic episode is one of the many difficult moments of a woman who has lived her life in extreme ways so far, from her debut on Rai as Miss Good Evening in 2003 to her recent vicissitudes. Now her son takes care of her, Giancarlo Armati, 25 years old, economics student, born from Sanjust’s marriage to 007 Federico Armati. A complicated task for Giancarlo Armati, who has experienced the role of the son in a somewhat distorted way and has to follow his mother, a bit like a parent.
Mr. Giancarlo Armati, how does your mother, Virginia Sanjust from Teulada, live today?
“My mother lives today as poorly as few of us could.” All of this is difficult to explain. But it is his legitimate decision that is renewed every day. Mom had all sorts of chances, so many people reached out to her, but every time she turned around and made it impossible for her to help. He created scorched earth.
It seems to be a role reversal between mother and son. As a caregiver, you are tasked with taking care of your mother: How do you present yourself in this situation?
“I wouldn’t speak of a role reversal at this moment. Like my mother Virginia, a special being and outside of any mold, the roles were never conventional. My mother appeared when I was two years old and I was already living with my father. It still appears today. Unfortunately, years ago he seemed to me to be a being of infinite beauty and generosity, but today I see a person shaped by life with whom it is unfortunately becoming increasingly difficult to establish a connection. But the endless love and affection without any ifs and buts remains unchanged for both of them.”
When was your appointment as Support Administrator?
«Since July 2020, the Grosseto court has appointed me as my mother’s AdS. For me it was an honor and a responsibility, but with a lot of fear.”
Why were you nominated?
“For the relationship between me and my mother, I am the most suitable person to fulfill this task.” I hear it every day. Wherever he is, I know for sure that he will call me.
What is his role?
«My main task is economic management. My mother suffers from a form of bulimia when it comes to money. I take measures to divide his resources and distribute them day by day to avoid as much as possible from running out of money. If he had to manage them alone, he would give them all out on the first day of the month and then be without them for the following 29 days. Other tasks include following up on the numerous legal issues and liaising with the relevant healthcare professionals.”
How did you feel when you were told you had to act as a support administrator?
“My mother was happy because she knew I would never betray her. Unfortunately, too many people close to her have betrayed their trust and too many have taken advantage of her. Although it is true that she herself, with her problems and her way of being and living, very often made any kind of relationship with all the people who were close to her difficult, almost impossible. She was a very loved woman, but she never knew how to maintain anything.
Why did your mother try to steal from a car the other day?
“I don’t think he tried to steal the Smart, he wouldn’t be able to do that.” He was probably rummaging around inside, perhaps looking for cigarettes. Unfortunately it shouldn’t have been there. He should be at his home in Capalbio, where he has recently refused to go after repeated ostracism from his family. He has received complaints and warnings from his brothers, with whom he still shares the country house. This is another issue I deal with as an administrator. We hope that we will soon be able to share this house, where living together is now impossible. Last Sunday I got the impression that it was my mother sent away from the hospital because instinct prevailed among the medical staff Get rid of of an unwanted and expensive patient instead of admitting and caring for him. They sent my mother away without hesitation. I do not rule out that my mother deliberately searched the Smart for some kind of protest, with the intention of being noticed and stopped.
What does his mother say about his condition today?
“I talk to my mother very often about the life she leads, the people and places she visits. Where he sleeps from. Basically, especially when she has a clearer head, she tells me that this is how she wants to live. He just wants more money. More cappuccinos and cigarettes.
How do you think your mother can be helped?
“That is the question of questions. I still recognize that my mother has the freedom of judgment despite her obvious problems, and sometimes I wonder who can replace her to decide for her. As an administrative assistant and together with her, I make decisions in certain cases with the approval of the judge, but I do not represent myself and would never do so. I inform my mother about everything and share every important document with her and the court.”
Have you imagined a vision of the future?
“The ideal would be a journey into a community, perhaps far removed from its current reality. But the community will not welcome you unless you seriously demonstrate your true intentions and convince yourself to embark on a serious journey with them. Unfortunately, this underlying disease has not developed in my mother to date. However, I don’t believe in coercion.”
What memories do you have of your great-grandmother Antonella Lauldi? And what about your great-grandfather Franco Interlenghi?
“I didn’t spend much time with my great-grandparents. A little more about Antonella, whose last conversation I fondly remember.
What is the relationship like between your mother and father?
«My father and my mother have an important relationship that, despite everything, is still alive after more than 20 years of separation. My father is one of the three people, along with me and my grandmother Antonellina, that Virginia has always spoken to every day. A book could be written about the relationship between my parents.
Mr. Armati, what do you do for a living?
«I’m studying economics, I still have a few exams to go before I graduate. I am also a registered football referee in The Hague. My professional future? In the world of wine production, perhaps setting up a cellar like in Tuscany.”
