Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed on Saturday (March 5) that Russia would consider any country attempting to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine as a belligerent. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday sharply criticized NATO’s refusal to create a no-fly zone in Ukraine, which would allow an end to Russian aerial bombardments of the country.

“We hear that it is necessary to establish a no-fly zone over the territory of Ukraine. But it is impossible to do this from the territory of Ukraine, it can only be done from the territory of neighboring countries,” Vladimir Putin said. But any measure in this direction will be considered by Moscow “as participation in an armed conflict of any country”, the territory of which will be used to “create a threat to our military,” he added.

Western countries refuse to comply with this request of Ukraine, which could only be implemented by force (in particular, the intervention of Western military aviation. This would in fact entail a great risk of direct conflict with Russia, whose soldiers have been invading Ukraine since February 24. The Russian Air Force in a few days established control over the country’s airspace, largely destroying Ukrainian military installations.
