A volcano erupted in Iceland after strong seismic activity. The eruption began last night a few kilometers northeast of the municipality of Grindavik, near the capital Reykjavik, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Institute.
Images and a live feed broadcast by Portal showed molten rock bubbling like fountains from cracks in the ground, its bright yellow and orange colors contrasting sharply with the dark night sky.
There were a series of earthquakes in the region in November, which is why a volcanic eruption was expected. The authorities therefore declared a state of emergency and the town of Grindavik, with around 4,000 residents, was evacuated. The current volcanic eruption is the fourth in Iceland in three years.
Red alert level was declared for aviation last night. However, airport operator Isavia stated on its website that there are currently no disruptions to take-offs and landings at Keflavik Capital International Airport.
